Abu Ubaida: Unveiling the Enigmatic Face of Hamas in the Shadows of War: Who is Abu Ubaida, the Faceless Hero of Hamas? Unraveling the Persona Behind the Mask in the Ongoing Conflict – A Tale of Courage, Resilience, and the Battle for Hearts and Minds
In the heart of the current conflict between Israel and Hamas, one name resonates among Palestinians - Abu Ubaida, the military spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' armed wing. In the midst of a challenging and intense battle, Abu Ubaida has become a hero for many Hamas supporters worldwide and a despised figure for Tel Aviv and its allies.
Since October 7, Abu
Ubaida has been a prominent figure on screens, delivering recorded speeches in
a green camouflage soldiers' uniform and a red keffiyeh, updating on
Al-Qassam's position and developments in the ongoing conflict. He has
effectively managed the media war against Israeli spokespersons, earning praise
from Palestinian supporters of Hamas.
Abu Ubaida first gained
recognition in 2002 as one of Al-Qassam's field officials, adopting the
practice of concealing his face, similar to the late Imad Aqel, a former
Al-Qassam leader. After the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, he officially
became the spokesperson for Al-Qassam.
Hailing from Naalia in
Gaza, occupied by Israel in 1948, Abu Ubaida now resides in Jabalia. Despite
facing multiple bombings of his house in various conflicts, he continues to
emerge as a symbol of resistance.
In the 2014 war, Abu
Ubaida announced the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Shaul Aron, sparking
spontaneous marches and chants in support of him and the resistance across the
West Bank.
While Israel claims to
know his true identity, asserting that he is Hudhayfah Kahlout hiding behind
the keffiyeh, neither Hamas nor Al-Qassam has officially commented on this
information.
Abu Ubaida, who presented
a master's thesis titled "The Holy Land between Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam" before the 2014 war, is now considered the forefront of the
psychological war against Israel. Despite challenges and personal losses, he
remains a steadfast symbol of Hamas' resilience in the face of adversity.
